Hello and welcome to day 12 of Promptvent!
If you’d like some wintry musical inspiration whilst you write, why not try listening to ‘It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas - Piano Version’ by David Shultz on Spotify.
Listen to me read the guided invitation via audio below or if you prefer to read the transcript, that is also available for you underneath the audio.
Welcome back to our Promptvent village advent calendar where you find yourself standing once again before the cozy Christmas window.
Bundled up in your warm woolen mittens and thick scarf, you are eager to to know what wintry word of the day awaits you. What world will you step into and discover today? You lean closer, and can feel the eagerness in your fingers as you pull off your mittens and reach for the iron latch on the window, lifting it with care.
The nostalgic sound of Christmas classics dance in your ears from a nearby radio. Your eyes settle on a large Christmas tree, a real one, with a red and white patterned skirt. At the foot of the tree are three large boxes labelled ‘Christmas decorations’ in marker pen. There is a side table to the right with a buffet of finger food, wine and fruit juice. Suddenly a small dog comes leaping into the room barking, two children come running in after him, squealing excitedly at the sight of the tree. They are followed by a small gaggle of adults of varying generations, all smiling and chatting away, wearing Santa Hats. One of the party turns to you and beckons you in, ‘It’s almost time to decorate the tree, I’ll get you a drink!’.
The red wreathed door to your left slowly opens, inviting you further. You step through the door, stamp off the snow from your boots and hang your winter coat up on a golden brass hook. The smell of pine needles and citrus fills your nostrils and you are transported back to many Christmases spent around the tree, decorations scattered everywhere. You are handed a large glass of something warm and fruity with a hint of cinnamon as someone hangs some tinsel around your shoulders. The children begin showing you their favorite items and ask you to put them on the branches they can’t quite reach. Everyone grabs a section of the fairy lights and wraps it round the tree, weaving around and under each other, much to the delight of the children who start making chapel tunnels for each other, in time to ‘Rocking around the Christmas Tree’.
When the group mission is successfully achieved, you go to the box and reach into it. The musty smell brings back memories of Christmas stored in the loft, until that fateful day when the magic starts. You recognize some of the decorations and turn them in your hands, some make you laugh, some bring a pang of melancholy and others give you butterflies - you thought these ones had been lost!
When the tree is fabulously dressed with a mix match of baubles, tinsel, lights and various figurines, a child hands you the Star and says, make a wish! You close your eyes and make a wish quietly to yourself and then place the Star firmly on the top of the tree. The lights turn on, making everything sparkle. Everyone cheers and claps and stands back to admire their work. As you do the same, your foot hits the box and something falls out.
It is a notebook and pen in the shape of a Christmas tree. As everyone trails off to get food, you open the notebook, which reveals one word in large cursive script written at the top of the first page.
It reads: DECORATION
The family strike up a Christmas sing-a-long on the piano in the next room, and you sit by the tree whistling merrily with them, remembering all of the Christmases past, present and future. Then you pick up the pen - and write.
PromptVent Day 12
Decoration
Last week we decorated the beautiful Norwegian Spruce tree ready for Christmas. It’s just me, my husband and our little dog, Bertie now as our children are grown up and live away but they will be joining us and love to see the tree full with memories.. We’ve had many happy Christmases, some very difficult ones which I’d rather forget and some very sad. As I hung up the decorations each brought a memory with it, some smiles and a few tears.
Lovely, happy times with babies in Scotland, as I hung a Santa’s bought at the glittering Christmas shop in Edinburgh and soft moons and stars made by a mum and good friend at the toddler group, we lost touch years ago. Thoughts of heather and bracken and the wonderful picture of her running free came into my mind as I lovingly placed a wooden Irish Setter with the name Rosie imprinted on it. She was our first dog, so gentle and beautiful, long passed now, and beside her I put Rosie’s best friend, a miniature dachshund, Gemma, they were never willingly apart. A bauble with a photo of Joe, my Cocker Spaniel and soul mate is found a special place on the tree and next to him is his pal little Bella, our pretty, honey coloured dachshund who sadly left us five years ago. She was the very sweetest of souls.
Then I picked up the baubles bought on a romantic weekend in the Peak District which turned out not so romantic, as I came out in a very itchy rash, the car broke down and we had to be towed all the way back to Scotland.
A decoration bought at Disneyworld generated thoughts of my daughter dancing with Mickey Mouse, her face full of delight and then there’s a Manchester United one from when my son was a big fan.
There are crimson balls with our names engraved, which were place holders at my nieces wedding and were handwritten in my mum’s beautiful script. This brings back a photo taken there of my mum and dad looking so happy together, but mums sad and lonely now as my dad died a few years ago.
There are many more decorations bringing memories bitter and sweet until the tree is heavy with the beautiful stories of our lives.

Decoration
The expression of taste is in the decor . Times when what is there, or given , is not a style bringing joy or even practicality . However when a little decoration is added a homely , cosier or much tasteful and personalised area is created . It is amazing how an imaginative person can transform a rundown or utilitarian place into somewhere peaceful , atmospheric and amplify the vibration . They say walls have ears. Chasing out the doldrums with tasteful touches, implore a dwelling to be lived in. Or occupied for purpose rather than stagnation .
Once upon a time I lived in a place with a very bad atmosphere, it was also filthy , damaged cracked windows with peeling walls in the bathroom . The general proportions of the bedroom and lounge were pleasing with high ceilings and plenty of space . The kitchen was a joke, it had been placed in a hallway and consisted of a cooker , and sink . A fridge was placed in a small larder nearby . The bathroom was compact . The metal staircase leading to the front door was lethal on frosty or icy mornings .
It was turned into a home regardless , not my favourite place ,but it was a dwelling where friends and family visited us . We played music all the time and we cooked . My dad ran electricity cables making the kitchen lighter and built a drop down counter painting it white . The bathroom was lovingly touched up with an aqua blue emulsion . Just being deep cleaned bought the place to life and with old glass display units from a shop we built our own shelving The music centre , books and ornaments gave the place a lived in look . Sheepskin rugs on the carpet added a laid back and relaxed feel , the place was much nicer as a result .
Other homes have a blank slate . An empty shell and a time to choose anything . Imagine an empty room with absolutely nothing in it . That was me , moving into a tiny apartment with my clothes, teaching books and thankfully some household items I was grateful to have had sent over .
I had a wonderful friend who was on a mission to help me . She obtained a double mattress , a portable gas stove , a folding table . Before I knew it my landlady had asked a relative for a bedstead and matching bedside cabinets . I made a cover from thick foam to go over a trunk that became a sofa . Everything was simple and blended together . A patchwork quilt was laid over my bed . My landlady found a beautiful lace curtain which I still have . It all came together and I remember buying two lampshades which were expensive because light fittings were different in Greece . The one in the my bedroom was moveable and could be lowered , it was made of the palest slate glass . The ultimate piece was a huge bamboo fan, pale green fabric with painted flowers . I placed pictures of all my favourite people between the slats . My little balcony outside was full of plants which I grew from cuttings .A little home was born and it evolved over the four years I lived there .
